Custom tank idea

Post by Guest » Tue Jul 31, 2007 11:38 pm

I've seen posts from other crabbers about how they've put two tanks together to make a larger one. The most recent one I've seen is about how they put two 10gallon tanks together to make a 20gallon tall (sorry but I'm kind of scatterbrained right now and don't remember who the post was from). I'd really love to be able to do something like that. I can't get a huge tank like I'd really like to because I live in a dorm and coming home on breaks with a huge tank would be impossible.

I have a 20L and was wondering if I could use the same basic set up as another crabber did with their tanks (again I can't find the post : ( ) I would have all the substrate and water bowls and food in the bottom tank and then second levels, hammocks, moss pits, etc in the top of the tank. That way I could kind of have a 40gallon tank but I could take the top tank off to transport it to and from school. The hermit crabs get separate little "cabins" so they aren't flying around in a tank for a couple hours.

Would the glass of the bottom 20L tank be able to support the weight of another 20L tank on top of it (minus the bottom glass part)?

P.S. sorry that I can't remember who came up with this idea originally. It wasn't me and I would definitely give the creator credit if only I could remember or find the post.

Hi Golsama. I've only done my stacked 'tats with ten gallons. I'm assuming these things are made to withstand a lot since they have to hold so much water, and the upper tank is relatively light since it's all hammocks. So I would think it would work with 20s. Maybe that's my next project...

Thanks libbysmom...

Peggycats I absolutely loved your idea! I just got the 20L and already want to expand... but can't keep buying bigger and bigger tanks. I already have a 5 1/2 gallon hospital tank and an empty 10 gallon, plus I gave my sister a 15 gallon. I'd love to be able to just build on to my 20L. I've been thinking about how I could do so while still being able to use my glass lid and your idea was perfect!

Hmmm.
I've been thinking about doing something like this. Actually my idea was expanding it outward instead of upward.
I currently have a 20L tank and I'd like to maybe get another and add them side by side. I know that I'd need lots of silicone and maybe one of the plastic braces to put on the seam in between the tank.. I'm still gathering ideas so hopefully it works out!
Good luck with yours!

I sort of wondered about cutting round holes in the sides of two tanks and attaching a plastic tube Habitrail-style :)

Come to think of it, as active as these guys are, maybe I could just put plastic climbing tubes through the lids with hemp climbing nets inside and hook a bunch of tanks up modular-style.

Voila -- Crabitrail

lol That's EXACTLY what I've had rambling around in my head for...almost a year, now.

BTW, the tank-on-tank looks good. :) Way To Build!
