free & nice shells & how to get rid of the smell

Post by hermiefanatic » Sun Feb 10, 2008 11:00 am

i posted a thread about this, but couldnt find it. anyway, i went to my local fish store. they sell small-medium snails there for the aquarium. i saw some empty shells in the tank and the worker gave them to me for free. the shells are very nice, no holes and what not. i figured, hey, maybe the crabs might like them. the last time i posted on the thread, i said i couldnt get rid of the smell and tossed the shells. well, i found away to get rid of the smell. dump the shells into a bag. then dump in baking soda- enough to cover the shells. let them set for a day.wash the shells with water and repeat as necessary until the smell is gone. then wash in warm water until there is no more baking soda present. make sure its out of the inside of the shell. then boil for 5mins, and you have clean, non smelling, nice, free, shells for your hermies.
