Slug (came in with the herbs)
Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
Okay, here are some photos of the slug saga! To start with a little backstory, here is what the herbs planter box/pot (the long rectangular pot by the window) looked like a year and a few months ago (2 winters ago) when it was full of basil, with my h-crab Busy having a "night out on the town" in the center:
and here she is in close-up:
This past winter, we only had some parsley and chives so it's mostly bare soil. Here's the first photo I have of Sluggy, from Dec. 10 (notice slice of grape at bottom right):
and a wide angle shot:
So as you can see it was just him/her, for those first few weeks.

Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
Just when I was getting attached, it was time to travel. Pictures of Sluggy eating a well-balanced diet, in the days before I left (late December)...
Dog food kibble:
Chives (well, I don't really know if she ate any but it makes for a good photo):
Apple (note the nice slug-shaped bite that she made). I don't remember what the moldy thing was:
When we got home in January, Sluggy was still going strong. The next day, was the standoff with the spider.
This encounter looked alarming, but I guess it was just like one of us checking out a beached whale.
By day, Sluggy would mysteriously disappear. I presumed s/he was spending days between the pot and the drainage tray, but it wasn't until early January that I caught him/her possibly in the act of heading back to bed. Foreshadowing things to come...

Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
Here is one of the last photos I have of Sluggy. I realize now that this was only 3 days after the spider incident, but it seems very unlikely that had any impact. No doubt his/her lifespan had simply run its course.
Within a few days, I found a bunch of dinky slugs in the pot. Here are four that were exposed when flipping a piece of mulch:
Closeup. I love the dinky black dots on the end of their eye stalks!
A photo the next day (Jan. 14) - already I was seeing youngsters of different sizes:
Photo from the 26th, as they all merrily gathered around a piece of dog food kibble.
Closeup to show their "raccoon eyes"! It seems to happen during an intermediate age range - I don't think I've noticed it in the smallest or largest slugs.

Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
Fast forward a month or so to Feb. 20. There is a really obvious population boom at night when they are out. Photo of the right 60% or so of the pot, showing around 40-50 individuals.
Left half of pot. So probably 80-90 slugs on the whole soil surface (not counting any that took the night off).
One of the more interesting things I learned from this experience is that these slugs come in different color morphs (dark vs. light).
Photo from March 6 shows they're growing in individual size. Quite a few of them are around an inch in length now.
There seems to be a continuous range in dark/light morphs, in this March 7 photo.
But my subjective experience, over all, is that most of them look basically "white", and a minority (maybe 10-30%) are "dark" like the one on the right.
In this March 7 photo (daytime), you can see they're running out of space to squeeze in along the edges of the mulch. I realized later the mulch was stuck pretty firmly to the soil, so very few were actually managing to hide underneath the mulch.

Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
Yesterday, I finally took the slug pot outside to wish them farewell. In the final weeks, the slugs continued to be active at night, and a new generation of dinky sluglets appeared in the past couple weeks. The little ones seemed more likely to stay out on the soil surface during daytime. I also started noticing some very small earthworms. I fed everybody crumbled dog food, for the most part.
I peeked into the pot/drainage dish crevice one last time, and there was still a big crowd of slugs hanging out in there. My hope is that they will gradually migrate out of the pot now, into the ivy and other plants they are surrounded with. I will continuing watering them in the meantime. I checked on them at bedtime and they were happily munching on some leaves I had tossed onto the soil surface. For "sluggish" invertebrates, it's amazing what an appetite these guys have - already saw lots of holes in the leaves after a few hours. A happy sight! And there was also a slug on a new strawberry plant I had purchased (definitely not one of my guys). This kind of experience teaches me to love my enemies.
I do have photos from the mating slugs (months ago), I just haven't had much time lately to do that, but planning to post those soon.

Re: Slug (came in with the herbs)
To bring this slug story to a dramatic close, here is a selection of my slug mating photos from March 12, in chronological order. Numbers show photo number (for reference) and time. Based on the photo time stamps, these span a period of 17 minutes (from 12:23 to 12:40am), but this captures only a portion of the process. There was no point in the action where I noticed a "climax" of any kind, however, on perusal of the photos it became quite clear that during the period I documented, at least one of the slugs must have ejected some sperm onto the body surface of the other (or possibly onto itself), especially between 12:34 and 12:38. I did take some video too, and one of these images is a screenshot from one of the videos. Basically they kind of circled slowly around each other, each directing its organ at the other. At one point there was a third slug who took some interest as you can see. Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me!
