I have always used authentic fish net - I have never had issues with any of my crabs getting stuck in it. I used to have a hemp net also, but my crabs ate it! It disappeared about a year ago.

Just one suggestion. Cover 3 sides so they feel less exposed. I covered the sides of mine with foam board I got at the dollar store and a bit of tape. Cost me less than $6. They were much more active after I did that.

Feeling safe definitely makes them more active Image Foam board is a form of insulation, so just make sure your tank doesn't get too hot- especially over the summer Image

We've also used jute nets and all natural twine nets:) Definitely fun to make as diy projects!

So I was looking on the safe list, and I noticed plums are safe. Does that include the branches too? There is a Japanese plum tree here I was thinking of getting a branch off of.

Im not sure about plum specifically, but the wood of fruit trees is typically discouraged because of anti-insect properties that may also be harmful to crabs.

Edit: plum wood is on the not safe list, owing to a cyanide-like compound. Check it out under the heading 'prunus species':
