much anticipate JUMBO STRAWS! beautiful! *pics

Post by parrothead » Thu Jun 28, 2012 5:54 pm

I have waited years for Jumbo Strawberry Hermit Crabs, and I finally have them. Many times I have almost broken down and bought some from LHC, but always hoped I would stumble across some Jumbos and today, the wait paid off    :D :D

A friend of ours build habitats for the ATL zoo (he's the one who got my daughter a brazilian Opossum which we still have) and his wife called me today and said "Lindsay, you need to come down here, I have something you have been looking for"... I got there a WOW! Jumbo STRAWS!

I got 2, named them Scarlett and Rhett, and will be putting them in my 29 gallon :)

I didn't know Jumbos could live in a 29 g, before I thought they could only live in a 75 g or above. Those crabs are so awesome!

Oh no, the 29 gallon will be perfect for them. The issue is substrate depth and they have 8" in a 20" high tank and I may add more :D Most crabbers suggest 5 gallons of tank space per crab, but ideally, 10 gallon of tank space per Jumbo is best. With only two straws, the 29 is perfect. (I've been doing this a while lol) 8)

    BEAUTIFUL!!! You are so lucky!! Congrats! :D Hope to see a ton more photos of these guys in the future!

Jumbos aren't recommended to be kept in anything under about 50 gallons (THCP recommends 65+). I know some people do it, but jumbos are kind of the exception of the gallon/crab rule, and need a lot of space for exercise (they travel many miles in the wild). My Godzilla is an almost-jumbo, and even he looks too big for my 55. :) Just my opinion. But hey, it would be an excellent excuse to buy a big tank! ;)

What about putting them in my 75 with the pools? I have 20 crabs, but most are micro/small. The largest is medium/large. I figured they'd be better off in the 29 but I'd rather have them in the 75 with everyone else :D

I'd keep the micro's in the 29 and the small to large in the 75 myself.

No, my Scarlett's a PP. :c Still adorable lol. I haven't been able to get access to straws and I wouldn't be able to care for them properly anyways. ^^; You, my dear, are very lucky indeed.

They are FANTASTIC!!!!! Super jealous over here. So beautiful. They are going to be the belle(s) of the ball.

So- I don't quite understand where you got them. Do your friends run a pet store? or did you get them from people at the zoo? I'm just so envious- I wanna know all the details.

PS- I agree, I'd put them in your big tank. Can't you imagine how much fun they are going to have swimming around in those big pools? Aren't straws the ones that love swimming in salt water? They will be so eye-catching roaming around that big beautiful tank.
