Crabitat Remodel . ♡♡♡

Post by citiliviey » Thu Feb 19, 2015 1:41 am

Hey there, I'm new here and love it ! I have learned so much in the past couple of weeks . So I have added a lot of stuff that my crabbies need into their crabitat, like upgrading to a bigger tank even . I just added some moss and leaves in tonight, so I remodeled to make the tank a bit bigger . I am so proud of myself, I feel like I am learning so much and that I am so glad to have your help . Thank you guys so much, for making me such a greater crab mommy who is very very proud of her babies . I am still not the best, but I am getting so much better . Anyways, here it is, I'm so proud of myself .

Nice and roomy! Fake plants work so well in a crabitat -- gives them places to hide and climb on.

Just a suggestion but you may want to add more climbing structures, i.e., coconut matting against a wall, branches (sitting atop or poked into the substrate and leaning up against a wall), fish netting or plastic ivy. The netting and ivy is easy to attach with small suction cups. All of these items are fairly inexpensive: fish netting about $6 at Michael's or Hobby Lobby, coconut matting about the same at Petco/PetSmart, plastic ivy either at the Dollar Store, Walmart or the reptile section in Petco/PetSmart. Branches from "outside" can be problematic as they may come from trees that have been sprayed with pesticides so you're better off buying grapewood or mopani wood at the pet shop. Cholla wood can be found at Michael's or Hobby Lobby for about $3 for a 6" piece.

You'll quickly find out that redecorating is a neverending process as you'll always see pics of someone else's crabitat and think "Hey, that's looks great!" or "Why didn't I think of that?" so you're off to buy some more stuff  !

I agree that you should add some more climbing spots! A shower caddy as a moss pit with a branch or vine to get into, fish nets like Crabinski suggested, stuff like that. They love to climb. Mine especially love cork - they climb on it, sleep on it, eat it, poop on it, etc. etc. etc. You can never have too many fake plants or vines, either. :) So far it's looking good, though!

So true! I can honestly admit I've never been 100% satisfied with my own layout and I keep tweaking it.

Very encouraging to see your crabs actually in the pool. My guys don't go in either pool (except Big Enzo who is always falling into one of the pools from the overhanging vines  ), just stay on the edge to drink. I'm installing new pools this weekend, complete with bubblers, and hope to see deliberately wet crabs in the future!
