Have you tried adding extra shells to the tank? That might get your hermits out of the toxic painted shells.
When I adopted crabs in painted shells, they always changed the instant they had turbos offered!

I have a ton of shells layer around. Prime, the small red one refuses to change! We get more and switch them out all the time.

As for the pink guy Crabcakes, that picture was taken the night we rescued him, but I hope he changes soon!
