It's a thick coating not paint. I think it will hold up for a while. I've read the stuff about metal and I'm not convinced that is an issue.

I have the same shelf in my tat and it has held up well. I'm sure with enough time the crabs will pick at it and it will need to be replaced but it's great for second levels. I read a post a while back about someone who uses locker shelves and replaces them about once a year or if they're getting beat up. I think it's a great cheap way to do second levels.
