Bleach is great for sterilizing it if you don't know it's history or if it had reptiles. (Since they carry salmonella.) Since there are several types of bacteria that will grow in fish and animal tanks that can affect humans, sometimes it's best to start with a sterile tank.

White vinegar is the way to go to remove hard water and salt build-up. I've soaked tanks for days to get off heavy crud - all you have to do is lay the tank on the side that needs soaking and fill it up with just enough vinegar to cover it without it running over the top edge. Keep and eye on it so the vinegar doesn't evaporate all the way, and once one side is clean rotate the tank so the other sides get a soaking. Takes time, but it works!

Good work zoey!!! You got the hard part done!!! You move quick!!
I had a tank with algea I'm the corners and the worst hard water stains. I mean really bad! It housed 3 red eared sliders. I did what wodesorel said by leaving in on it side with vinegar, except it really didn't take long for it to have to sit there and I used a green scrubby sponge (the 3m scotch brand) and scrubbed lightly in circular movements. For some reason if you scrub in one direction it doesn't work. The tank looks like new. I honestly thought it was going to have those stains forever since I had tried everything else.

Thanks. The lid actually isn't finished yet. We aren't sure if it is going to work or not. Right now i'm just using the lid that doesnt fit with books on top of it to hold it in place.
