HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hey everyone! I haven't said much in awhile because I've had an empty tank and have been busy redecorating and arranging the empty tank for new crabs, but I got word yesterday that my three new babies are ready for me to come get, so I finished the tank up in a rush and wanted to share my excitement with you guys!

I'll be bringing three PPs home tomorrow. Their shell sizes right now are 7/8", 5/8", and 3/4". This is my 25 gallon tank (24x12x20") with 10" of playsand and EE substrate. The pools are empty and the moss and hemp are dry - the sand is damp and the heater and humidifier are running. I'm waiting until right before I leave for work tomorrow to get everything going and I'll pick them up that night!

Yep! There's a rescuer about 1-1.5 hours from me and she has LOTS of crabs and found my want ad on Craigslist, so I've been waiting for the last one to come up from a molt before driving to get them!

I absolutely will!

Just for funsies and to help placate my excitement/impatience while dragging through work before I can go pick them up, here's the half of my room I have dubbed "Kritter Korner" and just finished setting up! (I rent a 12x12' room with a small walk-in closet from a family, so this is half my space!) I spent the last couple of days rearranging everything and it makes so much more sense now. I'm loving this setup!

THEY'RE HERE!!!

We got back so late last night that I just took TONS of photos and went straight to bed, then some more this morning! They are all small PPs and totally friendly sweethearts!

The tiniest in an oversized shell but too stubborn to switch: (female)


The middle-sized has claimed this rock and slept on it all morning: (female)



The largest trampling EVERYTHING and eating ALL of the fruit: (sex unknown)



Those are my babies! No one has names yet, but I'm thinking Turbo for the biggest!

They're lovely! Trampling, eating, climbing, sleeping = all signs of happy and secure crabs. Congrats on the new family members .

Thank you!! I was so thrilled that they didn't just hide right off the bat! Not scared a bit. Stephanie took such great care of them, so they were perfectly happy!

Okay your little guys are wearing the prettiest shells and im also super envious of how neat and clean your kritter corner is. It makes me want to clean mine up lol

Erik, thank you!! They really do look great! And don't worry - it was only because I had just finished setting it up. I assure you it's already been destroyed.

I just wanted to post just a COUPLE more pictures! I rearranged stuff yesterday and added a couple of things and they got to check it out.



There IS a crab in there!







I added the Mopani and a pile of moss behind it yesterday, and this morning ALL three are piled on top of each other back there! This was them playing King of the Log yesterday.

Itty is the tiny one on top of the wood that disappears into her shell and Tonka is the biggest one sharing the log with Itty. Still working on a name for the third, but here she is:



I realized yesterday that half her legs stick out of her shell when she hides. She needs to discover the shell shop. She doesn't seem to be as curious as the others, but she does love her giant rock and found the group moss pit sometime in the middle of the night.

This one was shedding its exo, which I thought was cool!

So glad you got some mopani -- it's the only type of wood that has never developed any mold in my tank! I've picked up some new crabitat items over the past few weeks and feel inspired to do some redecorating after looking at your pics so, "Look out, guys! Tank revamp impending!"
