New 20-gallon tank

Post by OBXPair » Fri Jul 17, 2015 8:12 am

Just moved my PP pair from a 10-gallon tank to a 20-gallon! I made this hiding/climbing structure by tying an aquarium log to a Dollar Store spice rack. The plastic "rope" is from an old Fisher-Price pirate ship, and the blueberry branches are from my back yard (pesticide free).

On the other end I put an elevated moss pit and a canary-ladder with a jute mat woven through the rungs. (Yes, I crocheted the mat and the hammock! :))

For comparison, here's the old 10-gallon tank. :(

Great job! Nothing feels better than repurposing stuff -- so Macgyverish  ! Can you post a clearer picture of the aquarium log-spice rack creation? I love the idea and would like to give it a try for the 29g.

Here you go! First the front view, minus blueberry branches. (I added another pirate ladder today. Jeff really likes climbing them.)

Now the side view; you can see how I tied the aquarium log on top. It's tilted forward a bit but doesn't seem in danger of falling, so I'll probably leave it as is. Apparently that's how Jerry wants it.

And finally, the side view from a lower angle so you can see how much room there is underneath. By the way, the back legs of the spice rack wanted to sink into the substrate, so I placed a moss pit in a shallow glass dish under each of them. That did the trick!

Looks great! You've got my brain ticking, lol...

You may want to consider leaving out the sponge; they need to be sanitized daily (not just rinsed) to keep away the icky bacteria they grow. Plus they don't really help much with humidity or anything unless they are huge.

Thanks, Kleiner. Consider the sponge gone. What about the water pillows? The crabs seem to enjoy sitting on them. Should I clean them daily? Is hot water sufficient?
