New member, new crabber!

Post by Derpstra » Thu Dec 03, 2015 3:05 pm

Hello~! I am Elle! I have been lurking here for the past few weeks and now I am ready to post my work in progress of a tank!
I have wanted hermit crabs since I was in high school, and once I moved into my college apartment I started looking on craigslist every week. Finally I saw an ad for two small hermit crabs and a tank for $15. I didn't know much about them, but I knew that the conditions they were living in were very bad for them! I immediately contacted the person and went to go retrieve them. I have spent my time since then reading up on this website and gathering supplies for them. I have a few more items on the way from eBay, but they are loving their new home! I currently have three PPs; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Zeus is about an inch and a half, the other two are maybe a little less than an inch big.

Here is the current set up until the rest of my items arrive:

Here is what the tank looked like when I went to go save the little guys:

Still coming in the mail are my hygrometer/thermometer, vines, moss, my glass lid, and my heating pad. I still have the miniature water dishes, but they are currently in the drawer underneath since i added the in ground water bowls. Zeus likes to knock the water bowls over so I figured this was the best way to keep him from spilling everyday. I want to add a second shelf to the other side so they have even more room to climb around. I am also currently working on a second jute wall and a jute net to climb. I'll feel a lot more comfortable once the hygrometer gets here and I can better monitor the humidity in there, but there are always water droplets on the walls and saran wrap.

What a difference in the crabitat -- it's hard to believe it's the same tank! You've really optimized the space very well (love those pools) and have given those crabs a whole new life. I'll bet they're well on the way to worshiping you!

Like all the others, A-Maze-ing. :D I really think I'm getting tank envy, I'm loving the walls, great climbing space.

Welcome to the forum, Elle! I'm really digging your set up and it's giving me great ideas for a crabitat. One question, and it could be addressed to anyone, really. How difficult is it to clean out your water bowls? I'm asking because the rocks must weigh down the plastic bowls and having to dig it up daily seems messy. I've seen people use a bowl within a bowl to make things easier.

Great job and happy crabbing :D

This is so beautiful! I'm currently trying to build my crabitat too. I've spent the last couple of days ordering some supplies from Ebay to add to their crabitat. I can't wait!!
