New adoption!!

Post by purpleperson » Mon Feb 15, 2016 4:29 pm

Alrighty, so I've been keeping a little secret ;) for the last couple of weeks I've been planning an adoption! It's been sooo hard for me not to mention anything but I didn't want to jinx it. Image

Since I live in a remote area of Canada adoptions aren't exactly easy to come by. These guys are coming from 6 hours away. Originally I was supposed to be on a trip there but it did not work out, so my boyfriend (who also had a trip planned) is picking them up for me! They should be arriving later tonight. I'm so excited!

I do not know much about the condition that the crabs are in, the pictures I was sent were pretty inconclusive. The owner seemed to be trying to do best but was just not overly educated on crab care. (They constantly misspelled hermit crab lol) Both crabs have molted recently according to the previous owner, but their shells are much to small and they had no other options. The previous owner has had them for 3 years in a 5 gallon tank with a screen lid, a UTH, about 4-5 inches of Eco earth, a cocohut, shallow salt and fresh water dishes with sponges (not sure what kind of salt) and a food dish. Unfortunately they seemed to be fed froot loops.. (???) at least that is what was in all the pictures.

They seem to be pretty small, so my tank shouldn't be overcrowded yet, and I have already been looking for an option to upgrade. ;) he was asking 50$ for the crabs and all of their supplies, but after seeing a pic of my setup he offered me the crabs for free. I can't wait for them to get home!

I'll update with pictures if my boyfriend sends me any, and I will post some once I get them in my tank. :) until then, here are the pictures I have of them from the previous owner.

Congratulations on your new crabby friends! I'm sure they'll be so glad to get settled into their new home. It was nice of him to let you have the crabs for free once he saw how good the care that you'll be providing them is.

Thanks! I can't wait. They're coming from Saskatchewan :p I'm really thankful he let me, he said the reason they decided to sell them is because they realized that they couldn't give the crabs the care they needed.

That's nice that he cared for them. I recently tried to do an adoption too but unfortunately the lady was only interested in making money, she didn't care about the crab's best interests. She also wanted 50$ and she had the one lonely crab in a really awful setup; critter keeper, pink aquarium gravel, 1 shallow water dish... (you get the idea). I was low on cash so I tried to get her to sell it to me cheaper or to just give me the crab and sell the rest separately but she wouldn't go for it and shortly after she took the ad down. I just hope someone else bought the crab who'll actually take care of it.

Oh that's too bad :/ it's unfortunate when things don't work out like that, or when people don't realize/don't care that they are harming them, and not properly caring for them. Poor crab. I hope it's okay somewhere!

Lovely crabs! Kudos to you for adopting and kudos to the previous owner for letting you have them gratis after seeing your set up. The two tiny/small PPs I adopted from craigslist about 15 months ago were also free to a knowledgeable crabber; I had only a 10g at the time but set up properly and the couple dropping the crabs off called it a "crab palace" and, compared to what they'd been surviving in, it was!
PPs are Big Enzo, Charles Paris and Mr Pinch
On the Big Beach in the Sky: Murray, Gino, Oscar, Gordon, Ignatz, Harry and King Felix the Pale
Also Mom to Imogene the Syrian Hamster

Thank you :) technically all of the crabs I have right now have been free adoptions, however the four I have now were given to me by a friend so I'm not sure if they count as a real adoption. I have my fingers crossed that they settle in well. :)

They're here! Pictures coming soon. So far looks like one boy and one girl, which if that's correct I'm pretty sure my total will be 5 girls and one boy they seem a little stressed but they are exploring right now so I'll get some new pics up soon. They are so small compared to the crabs I have now!!

I got some new pics so I figured I'd put them here instead of make a new thread :p the one from the turbo changed into a green turbo and the one in the yellow shell changed into the others old turbo :p silly crabs! they have so much personality though. Most small crabs that I've had are not quite as outgoing. :) there has been lots of shell swapping going on lately and it's been interesting to see. These guys probably changed about 4 times each and one of my big ones keeps swapping shells as I type this! Silly crabs :p anyways.. Here's some pics. :)
