Got the big tank set up

Post by lorderagon » Sat Sep 10, 2016 11:12 am

Just wanted to share our new tank we got and set up. It's a little sparse but hopefully it will work well for our crabs. And we will be able to add more stuff for them. We got two new crabs to go into the new tank too. Though they have been in isolation for the last week. Mercury has been moved to the new tank already. He scurried around the place and checked everything out. Climbed on top of the hiding hut and to the top of the branch. Eragon dug first and I havent seen him since. Apollo is still in our first tank. We still havent seen him in a week or two. This morning we put some food in there so we could tell if he is coming to the surface every night. Artemis is our other new crab, and he hasnt come back up out of the substrate since he was put in his isolation tank. We are sitting at about 78% humidity and about 75° temp.

If anyone has sugguestions on what else we can add to the tank to make a better crabitat it would be greatly appreciated.

You could use fishnet from the craft store or crochet it yourself using http://newstitchaday.com/how-to-crochet ... sh-stitch/ and natural hemp or jute cord. Then soak it in saltwater and allow to dry and hang it on the back of the tank using suction cups or zip ties. Another possibility is getting fake plants at the pet store or Walmart in the reptile/aquarium section. These all would give more climbing space. :)

It looks like you're off to a great start!

Keep in mind that crabs are prey animals and need plenty of places to hide so they feel secure in their home.

Plastic plants work well.

They also spend a lot of time climbing trees in the wild so second levels, cholla, oak branches, slabs of bark and other safe untreated woods are great additions to the crabitat!

I've heard of people using burlap before, I'd just make sure it doesn't have chemicals on/in it. Also soaking it in SW would work to clean it before you put it in and that would also work for occasional cleaning. It helps keep mold away from it too.

Ok thank you! I bought some help and jute today to crochet the climbing stuff.

We will work on getting the plastic plants. I have seen those second levels and I really dont understand how they work. Do you cut half of the glass out of the bottom or flip it upside done? We have a 5g or 10g tank that we could use for that but idk how its done...

Second levels needn't be a tank topper. You can create second/third levels using reptile hammocks (http://www.petsmart.com/supplies/habita ... m%3Dsearch), suction-cup soap dishes, shower caddies, kitchen cabinet shelving, etc.

This is an older configuration of my 29g utilizing a 2-tier corner kitchen shelf from Walmart (about $6). The top shelf held the moss pit, the lower shelf served as a shell shop and there was plenty of space underneath for a cocohut hide:

Check out this topic: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=111519&hilit=food+dish. A member was very creative and made a second level from a plastic dish drainer!

Fish net is a very versatile item as it can be hung around the back and sides of the tank to provide climbing (and napping) fun, can be cut into smaller pieces to drape over climbing sticks or used as a means of access to a second level. It can be found in craft shops like Jo-Ann, Michael's and Hobby Lobby in plastic bags for around $5. In the above pic of my tank, you can see the fish net along the walls. Just be sure to give it a good soak in very hot water first as it's real used fish net -- the hot soak will remove any small debris and will reduce the "fishy" smell (not that the crabs would care  !).
