Two is better than one

Post by PinchersAndShells » Wed Nov 02, 2016 7:37 pm

The two crabs I adopted a little over a year ago from my mom's boss who could no longer take care of them were up today. The camera quality isn't top notch but the pictures aren't too bad.

Ack! I adopted them awhile back, sorry for the confusion  I have had them for over a year now, I'm just happy they're both doing well.

That's Edd, I'm pretty sure he's a purple pincher, he's my most purpley gray crab as the only place on him that has a bit red is his armor leg.

Don't you love how they have the most random coloring? I don't think any of my 2 crabs are alike in color! Mrs. Robinson is like Edd though. She is all purple, but she has one extra fat armor leg that is a fire engine red.:

Nice! I was really surprised that Edd was so purple when he came back up, hopefully yours retains some of his blue color!

 Absolutely, and I'm a bit excited for my paler two (Momo and Enoch) to molt again, I've been trying to add more foods high in astaxanthin into the crabs diets so those two can get some color, so it's just a wait and see game now.

Any of your others up yet?. I'm so interested by the crannies colors. Also do you happen to know where I can find a list of foods high in astaxanthin? I knew foods could effect the color but never knew what did it.

Momo went down for awhile and came back up, and Enoch has been up for awhile.
The two big things I've found are:
Astaxanthin
Definition - a strong pigment molecule that is usually found in rich red foods.
Function - enhances color in land hermit crab's exoskeleton and aids in keeping organ systems and bodily functions healthy.
Foods - krill, plankton, red seaweeds, shrimp

Beta Carotene
Definition - an orange and red pigment molecule that is found in brightly-colored foods.
Function - enhances red and orange color in hermit crab's exoskeleton and is processed into Vitamin A in a hermit crab's body
Foods - apricots, bell pepper (red, orange, and yellow), blueberry, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrot, chard, cilantro (raw), collard greens, dandelion greens (raw), lettuce (dark), mango, microalgaes, papaya, parsley (raw), passionfruit, peaches, peas, persimmon, pineapple, pumpkin, snap beans (raw), spinach, spirulina, squash, seaweeds, sweet potato
That was in Hermit Crab Nutrition by Kilimanjaro.
