New crabitat upgrade

Post by Madi.crab » Sun Mar 11, 2018 6:31 pm

Hey guys, I just updated my tank for my birthday and I wanted to show you some pictures so far. I will be getting some more decorations and crabs, I only have Luna and Magnus in there at the moment (Shelby is molting). It does look very bare at the moment so feel free to give me suggestions of some things I could buy for them at pet stores and on ebayImageImageImageImage

So many possibilities! Maybe a moss pit? You could make a net, maybe, or make a second level. :D How deep is your substrate? :)

Five inches, should be enough cause Luna and Magnus are fairly small

Congrats on the new tank! Just a reminder, substrate should be a minimum of 6" all around the tank. :)

I love the look of this tank! Where’d you get it? My crabs like spider wood from aquarium shops

Going with above, since spiderwood isn't in Australia I would reccomend golden vine. Very similar in appearance and the crabs love climbing on it.

IMO, I would suggest adding some levels in there to increase overall space. Another good idea would be some plastic plant mats (you can get them off ebay under $5 each, sometimes had a sale for $1 each) and some suction cups and line the walls with the mats as climbing surfaces.

Maybe look into adding some coconut fiber brick (one should suffice to get it to at least 6 inch IMO) to increase sub height and offer a good humidity boost.

Other than that, its a good start!

New crabitat upgrade

I love the tank! My crab tank is roughly the same size, and I love how much space the crabs have to move around and dig in. I always add plenty of climbing ornaments and pieces of wood in my tank, because the crabs love to climb on everything. You can find climbing ornaments such as bridges, huts/hides and aquarium wood in the fish decor section of most pet shops, as well as tank backgrounds if you want to give your tank a theme. Also, climbing leaves are great for adding into your crab tank, as it provides areas for the crabs to hide in, or climb on. These can be found in the reptile section of most pet stores Have fun decorating the new tank!

I used to have a plant mat for the tank, I had to throw it out because it started falling apart somehow which was odd. I will look into coconut fibre, and will have a look on eBay and find some things as well.

I got the tank at an aquarium about an hour and a halfs drive from where I live, which is out in the country. So I will have a look into nets, more plant mats, some more climbing things like houses bridges or branches. Thanks all for the ideas for my tank!! Will get decor soon so my crabbys don't get bored. I might also be getting some more crabs so I will show you pics of the newbies when I get them.

And also how would you recommend creating a second story for them?

This is what I did. I attached a wire shelf (the ones coated in plastic). Attached with hooks to the tank and the front of shelf tied to hooks on underneath of lid, with string. Then attached a bird ladder, which I attached burlap to the rungs. And I have 2 moss pits. One with another bird ladder and netting too, to it and the other has driftwood underneath it close to a vine, attached to the moss pit.ImageImageImageImageImage
