Crabitat v2.0

Post by ColdLeftOvers » Mon Nov 15, 2021 3:51 pm

Well, both our P.P.'s have come back from their 1st molt since we got them this summer. Our bigger crab had me a little worried because he was down for quite a while... almost a month and a half. The little guy, Spungebob, went down right after the big guy came up and was only down for about 2 weeks thankfully.

After the big guy came up I decided to upgrade the tank as I felt the old 10gal was a little cramped for them, even though by all the notes I've read, a 10gal should be good for crabs our size. I didn't like how they didn't have a lot of room to really roam, I couldn't give them a lot to climb on AND have proper substrate depth, and their water pools were now too small for their new shell sizes.

So while Spongebob was down I went out and bought a 29gal Aqueon Standard Aquarium and a few new toys so I'd be ready to build out their new Crabitat as soon as he popped up and before they went back down again

The aquarium is 18" tall, so now I can give them 6" of substrate and still have enough headroom to build out climbing structures.
I almost went with a bigger tank but these guys are still fairly small and I'm sure I've already gone over-kill for just 2 little crabbies.
With the bigger tank they now have two 7" deep by 3"x6" water pools to play in (with bubblers), a shell-shelf, 2 coconut hanging hides, a treadmill, a moss shelf and lots of rope-bridges to climb around in.

I was pretty happy to see them climbing around right after we put them back into the tank. In the past they would always hide in a corner under the moss or bury themselves for a few days whenever we refreshed their aquarium. This time they stayed out and just started climbing on everything.

Here are some before and after pics. Feel free to comment or give any advice on how to make their home even better!

Looks great!!

I started back in this hobby with two 29s. They seem big when you carry them into the house, but once you start setting them up? Not so much.

I've got some maple and oak branches that go corner to corner in my setups. Lots of climbing activity on them. One of my little guys spends most of the day on the branches.
Two 29gals. 3 PPs in each.
~200gal of fish tanks. Mostly planted community tanks.
Multiple kiddos, doggies and kitties.

Thanks. Yeah... I was almost going to go 30gal but the 29gal was a little taller and I really wanted more height for them to climb around. It's mostly figuring out how much room you'll have left after adding the Substrate and water pools...

I could barely fit any climbing structures in the 10gal after I added about the minimum Substrate the crabs needed.

I think the new set-up looks awesome. I'm sure they're also loving the space!

Thanks.
They were checking it all out the other day, but now I think they've holed up somewhere as I haven't seen them out in the open for about 2 days.

Our little crab seem to be the more adventurous one. He'll stay out during the day and isn't bothered if we watch him.

The bigger crab is super-skittish. He runs off as soon as we come in the room. Sometimes we can't even get close to the tank before he hides.
