If your buying water from a jug in a store, it's best to just treat it with the drops to be on the safe side. Just cause a co. Says that what they put on it didn't mean that's what's in it..Just like stuff that says " organic " turn the label and there is tons of crud in it. I just use tap water and drops. Can't afford to buy water or worry about minerals? Been crabbing since 2009, never gave it a thought. I'm sure if you feed them a Good diet and use cuttle bone they are getting what they need

I know that crap tastes nasty. Yuk! As for the crabs I don't think it would be a good idea. The instant ocean and most other good salt mixes are supposed to have the minerals and everything to resemble sea/ocean water. I think it would be a waste of money and too much of a risk with the carbonation and they may get an overload of too many minerals.

@Keg, mineral water contains sulphur and in some instances contains trace amounts of arsenic which is supposed to be filtered out but the methods of filtration most commonly used don't always completely eliminate it which presents a risk to us as well as our hermitcrabs.I'm gonna go no on this one unfortunately.

What's your opinion on the carbonation part of it though? For curiosities sake.

@jenok, carbonation in beverages including water is added via several methods one of which is using dry ice so I'd be a little leery of carbonated anything when it comes to hermitcrabs as we don't know enough yet on how well they tolerate it if at all.

Learn something new everyday. I didn't know dry ice was used in the carbonation process.

@Jenok, Yup you can actually find a recipe for using dry ice to carbonate your own beverages at home its so easy, but what it does to the chemistry of the drink is whats so disconcerting to me.

Most mineral water in some parts of the world (like mine lol) have some metallic elements (but at levels approved safe for human consumption) that maybe a bit irritating to aquatic animals like fish so their usage for hermit crabs is still undetermined but i wouldn't risk it.Dechlorinated tap works well for me. Cheaper than mineral water too
