More cold weather...

Post by Crabber85 » Fri Jan 24, 2014 9:19 am

We just had a huge cold snap a week or so ago and now we going into yet another one.I've have a set of two way radios that have NOAA weather radio built on them which I use to keep up with the temps and so on and the latest weather report had us with a temp of 15 and wind chill of 2-9 and Monday we are supposed to have another extreme low of 9 with a wind chill of -0. I'm tired of these extremely low temps as they are playing havoc with our water pipes and even our supply points/mains coming from the county/city which has already had half of the city of Atlanta without water two weeks ago....I feel for those of you who live in the Northern states as your experiencing much lower temps than us...

If you haven't already, leaving the faucets on at a light trickle usually keep the pipes thawed for us.

Yeah we're dealing with that here too. The last bad cold snap then thaw we had there were over 200 main city breaks in Tulsa, OK. We've been checking the heater we placed in our well house too make sure it still work and nothing chews a wire into. Last time our pipes froze because of that so far so good this time.

@Laurie, I believe when the weather prevents children from going to school that they should not be punished by having to give up how ever many days or weeks of their much much to short summer vacations to make up for the missed days but unfortunately we don't have a system in place here that prevents this as most of the schools just tack the missed days onto the end of the year thereby extending the school year by x amount of time. Some of the schools will allow the students to trade in their Saturdays for a defined period of time instead of having to give up some of their summer vacation. When I was in school we got out in May and did not go back until the last week of August or the first week of September depending on how the months fell but for the last several years it seems like the summer vacation has gotten shorter and shorter now only lasting two months which just isn't enough time. The PTA voted down a plan to do away with summer vacations in favor of doling out the time throughout the year as they said that would not be the same as most families only get the chance to take a family vacation to the beach or elsewhere during the summer...

@crabber hope your doing ok I heard on the radio that Georgia and Alabama I think were getting really bad storms and people were stuck on the roads cuz they couldn't get home kids had to stay at school cuz it wasn't safe for them to go home ect...On the school subject our kids usually start sometime in August and get out sometime in May. If they start the first part of August they get out first part of May. I don't know if there is a chance to file an act of god form or not. I f they use all the snow days and still are out they tac them on at the end but I think the most I know of was an xtra week added, so in my opinion that's not too bad more than that I don't think they should have to go though. If they don't use all the snow days then they used to get out early but that changed so the Seniors wouldn't have to change their graduation. Now they just let the kids have however many Fridays off so they get a 3 day weekend. I think they should do it all at once like they used to.

@jenok, yeah we got about three inches of snow which shut down all of the highways and interstate roads coming out of Atlanta which had thousands of people stranded on the road because the back ups started just after four in the afternoon and continued on into the night with some people still in the same spot for the last six to eight hours due to lane shut downs and so on.Most of the people who got stuck out on the road ended up abandoning their cars and walking to nearby hotels either because their cars completely ran out of gas or because the traffic just wasn't moving. At eleven last night there were over one-hundred cars that had been abandoned on I-285 and I-85 because of lane shut downs.I stayed at home, really didn't have anything to go do in town so I just cooked and cleaned till my mother came home from work.lol
