Is Rambutan safe for hermitcrabs? I tried it I think twice before (not too close to each other)and had no problems with it but unsure weather it was by grace that they remained alive or if it is actually okay for them to have? Please let me know, THANKS!!!

I see a brief post on HCA about somebody feeding it to their hermies and it looks like it was considered safe. I had to google it because I was like wth is rambutan??

Ha! That's pretty funny...I found out that it's safe for dogs to eat but that the seeds contain cyanide like a lot of fruits. Some people on HCA have fed lychee which is a relative, I guess. It says it's native to the Caribbean which means for PP's at the very least it would be in their environment.

I'm gonna have to go no on this one as this fruit only occurs around the Malaysia/Indonesia regions and was only just recent successfully transplanted in Panama near Costa Rica meaning it doesn't actually naturally occur in the PP's distribution region. This fruit comes from an evergreen tree which isn't a big deal but it has been shown to have a natural analgesic(numbing) property which in certain amounts can kill a hermitcrab. The fruit isn't listed as having any specific toxicity as the seeds were tested and were found to have no poisons adherent to them contrary to popular folklore from the Malay/Indo regions. If it weren't for the analgesic property of the fruit I'd say it was okay.Bay leaves have the same analgesic property and are considered extremely toxic to hermitcrabs.

those rambutan trees now even grow here in Pitcairn. i tried feeding some to my hermits like 5 years ago. Luckily, i think they hate it. They just ripped the skin off then ignored the fruit pulp haha! they ate the leaves, though lol.. guess the leaves ain't toxic if they survived 5 years after i learned something new again. i really love this forum, quite unpredictable topics haha
