HBH Variety Bites a hit.

Post by Crabber85 » Sun Jun 30, 2013 10:49 am

@crabber101, HBH isn't using copper sulfate any more they have replaced it with copper proteinate which is much safer and since its placed near the bottom of the ingredients list it is only a very small dosage. Here is a link to Jedi Master Thrash's most recent thread on HBH variety bites.Copper sulfate is harmful to hermitcrabs in higher doses but the level necessary to make it a pesticide is about a thousand times that of what constitutes a preservative being typically less than a 1mg.Of course the issue with copper sulfate is long term exposure but if you give your hermitcrabs a mixed and varied diet the likely-hood of overdosing or poisoning your hermitcrabs is very low.

@T4, well not so much proven but it has been deemed safe since they HBH redid the product and removed the ethoxyquin as the main preservative and replaced it with a form of Vitamin E(Mixed tocopherols).

I actually doubted that it wouldn't have anything in it that would raise question with me. I just got some as well as a few other things. Guess I will see how the crabs like them tonight.

I'm gonna have to pick some up the next time I go to the pet store. That sounds promising.

I put some in the box with the new E's and I found one sitting in the dish munching away while I cleaned up the tank for them.

I almost picked up the cookies for them too, until I saw that it still had ethoxyquin. Wonder why they didn't redo that as well. :? Also, I don't know if they would easily be able to eat the cookies. I didn't like how hard they looked. They where like small stones!

Yeah I haven't ever used the cookies because they look to hard to be edible plus the ingredients list is still iffy on the product.I don't know why they reformulated the Variety bites and not the cookies its a bit confusing to me too to say the least.
