It's usually better to try to grow the plants outside the tank first and then add them after they are up. The crabs will often trash the sprouts otherwise. Just check the safe foods list to make sure whatever seeds you use are safe.

Yes, the pots will be fine, however, the crabs may find them and decide to taste them.I second what JMT said. The crabs will more than likely devour the sprouts.Feeding them additional cellulose and plant matter before you introduce the plants may help reduce the chance that they will destroy the plants.

I was actually wondering about them eating the peat pots themselves. I think they could make great little hiding places for them.

Will the crabbies nibble on the plants above (or are they just safe for them?)and if so, are there any other plants the hermies won't nibble on?

Those should all be safe. There aren't much more that I know of. I got that off a site where people have tested it with their crabs. I can't remember the site name. I went through and picked all the plants that weren't toxic. The crabs may nibble on all plants. I keep looking and more and more of my hosta is getting shredded!!! I was hoping they would keep off of it. No big deal since the hosta is readily replaceable.
