Thanksgiving For Your Crabs

Post by Nicole » Sun Nov 23, 2008 2:06 pm

A reminder to all those celebrating Thanksgiving this week - don't forget to save some for the crabs!Broken turkey bones and unseasoned chunks of meat, boiled giblets, plain sweet potatoes or rice, unseasoned veggies, and plain cranberries would all be a nice treat for the crabbies come Thursday night (or whatever else you serve that would be safe and tasty). My SIL always knows now not to touch the turkey carcass until I've removed some choice pieces for my babies.

They also like the raw fat!!(I remember a conversation about this quite some time ago, and I tried it. Crabs loved it!)

Can they have the gizzards and neck?

I believe that they can. I have fed them parts of the neck/gizzard before, and if I remember correctly, it went over well. They will even eat it uncooked! (just don't leave it in the tank too long, and look for any pieces around the tank, or else you'll have quite a stench!)

When you mention the bones, I assume cooked and cracked in half so they can get tot he marrow?

You can freeze their dinner. What I would use is Glad Press n' Seal and fold it over the food, then press the two pieces together. It's a pretty sticky wrap and will work well to keep out air and prevent freezer burn. Post molters often come up for a quick bite and a drink and return for a bit more rest before surfacing again so I wouldn't rush to offer it as soon as they surface, you may wind up wasting it. Wait until you see them actively hitting the dish and thaw and offer it then.

I baked chestnuts last night and cracked some open and left them in the shell and just put them around the tank...they defintiely were a hit as I found them moved all to new places and hidden in huts...
