@NickBI'm just trying to understand ~why~ one kind of heat would be healthier than another. In order to support the statement, it should be justified with some kind of scientific reasoning that explains a little further. A link would be sufficient.

can we just say there is nothing in this world that is healthy for your body any more?? there will always be someone in general out there trying to put a fear of something into you if you don't believe what they do, not referring to anyone on this site. I have come across the wearing of the Cross sideways. I was at a jewelry party that was Christian based and they have a side ways laying cross and some elderly lady spoke up and was bashing it, saying it was not Christian, it was evil, ect when this party was selling them.. the lady was that was the hostess was taken aback, she really didn't know what to say. She finally just said I will have to look into it and if I see that it's sacrilegious then I won't display it. I am not by no means a big religious buff but come on! my first thought was it must have to do with either it symbols of him being taken down from the cross or him having to drag the cross to his death.. well I looked it up. guess what I found? those 2 suggestions plus more. I emailed 2 of friends that were there and are Christians buffs told them what I found cause they are not comp people, told them don't let one old Christian person who is set in their ways and beleifs detour on what they want to wear and how they want to show their faith. My best friend bought a side ways cross for her daughter who is a trend setter, likes to wear things her own way..the hunters use my non stick skillets that the stuff has come off, i use my microwave, foods are full of preservatives, I take meds that can harm your liver and kidneys, the air you breath is full of gunk , you think about it..are we really truly safe?

@keg: Microwaves use friction that it creates within the water molecules which damages the food in a way that makes it less useful to the eater. Heat waves (for lack of a better word) heat up everything and don't use any sort of structure altering friction. I'm sorry that don't have a link for you, I read it out of a book and haven't had time to research online.@Laurie:While there are things we cant's avoid (like air pollution) there ARE ways to avoid most of those things. There are many many companies that don't put preservatives in there foods, you can use a toaster oven instead of a microwave and you can use stainless steel and cast iron skillets (neither of which are hard to clean at all). There will always be health problems but we should still be smart about them.

I have to stick up for my self here because it's like you are saying to me hey you don't know how to clean or take care of your self..we do have cast iron, we do have stainless steel,I have many types of pans..I said the hunters used the other types of pans. I do know how to clean them lol!. Unless you have lots of money to spend on the so called organic foods that have no preservatives you are stuck buying the reg foods and some times you buy what you can afford..p.s. I went looking at so called no preservative foods this past weekend and you turn the package over and there is tons of things listed for added this and that. here we live pay check to pay check. these things are way to costly. I do take care of my self I walk everyday almost an hour about 3 miles or depending how fast I walk I can get 4 in, I have lost 65 pounds I quit drinking pop, only drinking water and tea. I did not choose to be or get sick and have the medical issues that I do, but believe me I have researched my medical issues and when I go to my appointments I grill my dr.s I don't go in blind and just say hey give me drugs.. I don't choose to take them, I HAVE to take them for the rest of my life or suffer great pain, even though I KNOW they can harm me. I also get blood work every year to test my liver & kidneys because of the meds. I suffer from chronic migraines almost every other day and the topomax stops this and fybromyalgia. The migraines were so jaw seizing , it was exhausting, the other you look that up and now imagine what it feels like with every muscle in your body hurting x's3 everyday and it's worse at night where you can't sleep. during the day it's hurts to walk, do anything really..air touching your skin hurts. I still walked even though I was in pain cause they said it is good to walk as you can.. I went 6 months in chronic pain before I said I can't take it any more I need help. so you see I do take care of myself and I am smart about my health issues. Unless you plan on living in a plastic bubble you are going to be exposed to many harmful things in the world that you have no control and some will out weigh the ones you can control..so just live life to the fullest and be happy is all I have to say. Because one minute you are here and the next you could be gone! why worry over what happens to food in a microwave? learned that all to well this past week in Laharpe! very tragic death..don't sweat the small stuff

Interesting thing happened. I usually make eggs in a pan with butter or olive oil for myself and the crabs but I had some raw egg leftover from making dinner so I microwaved it. That was so easy, I thought I would consider that more often because the crabs LOVE eggs. They did not eat ANY of it. They usually smell it cooking and are waiting at the food bowl. Nothing. They left it alone all night. First time that has ever happened. They like them scrambled or boiled, there have been fights over it in the past. Nothing.Laurie - I feel your pain. I have lived with the same chronic pain you describe. I applaud you for working so hard, cutting out pop is one of the hardest things for many people. My husband can't do it even though he is losing teeth because of it. That said, when I have changed my habits to better quality foods, eating much like the ideals for the HC, organic for the dirty dozen, etc. I feel better and have significantly less pain. It is horribly expensive to see the natural doctors and sometimes it is impossible to follow their advice. I am on a thyroid suppressor which has the potential for liver damage but at $500 per month for the natural treatment coupled with not knowing how long I would have to be on that treatment, I could not swing that in my budget no matter what I tried to cut. Aside from hubby's daily pop, we have no latte factor. I am doing all I can to heal my body so I won't have to continue on this medicine or worse do the radioactive iodine to kill the thyroid. You do the best you can and minimizing or eliminating things like using the microwave and non stick pans isn't that hard and can make a difference without adding to my expenses. For me, it is worth it.

@luarie: I'm very sorry. I din't mean to insult you in any way. It was wrong of me to assume things. I didn't think that you were unable to clean things. I respect you for your achievements and especially congratulate for quitting pop. I'm very sorry to here about your pains and I am amazed that you endured so much hardship. I understand that they aren't your fault and that the drugs you take are necessary. I understand that compared to your other milestones changing out your microwave is really a baby step.@Geranium: I think what you said about sums up what I wanted to say. I'm gonna give my crabs some eggs. Thanks for mentioning it!

Crabies love..... eggs. I'm making deviled eggs for Thanksgiving and they're getting some shells and egg pieces before I season them.

Would raw eggs be safe? (if I found a way to serve them)
Cooking Experiment
From what I have gathered you can feed raw meat which would include eggs, but it's suggested not to, because of the health hazard it presents to humans. They crawl all in it and around it. We can wash our hands but the crabs can't wash so any time you handle it or expose it to a surface your transmitting bacteria from the crab to whatever it touches. A child is notorious for not properly washing so it becomes a danger to them if you have an adult only home or don't handle the crabs then I don't see any reason not too.Anyone else please feel free to step in and correct me if this is wrong.

I made deviled eggs for Turkey day and gave them a half of an egg that I hadn't seasoned yet they were all over it. I zap eggs and just make them slightly cooked and mine eat it, same with boiled eggs, if you make them soft cook / boiled they love them. ( mine )Yes you do what you can afford for your health. I don't use the non stick , the hunters do like I said. I bake foods or crock pot/ microwAve when needed to heat things up mostly. Very rarely do I ever fry foods or eat fried food, I do not eat fast foods like McDonald's, if I have to go there I get baked chicken, tea, my fries I give to my hubby or the kids. I am very lucky that I cleanp for a Dr and she c a n give me samples for my high blood pressure, and through losing wieght I got my dosage cut in half as well as my topomax! Yippy! You learn to live and deal with the pain. Some days are better than others

@NickB, Stainless Steel cookware is just as bad as the nonstick stuff as most stainless steel posts and pans have been coated with chromium which gives the shiny appearance and does exactly as the nonstick coatings ie it leeches into the food when prepared over any kind of heat, off gases and so on which makes using stainless steel for preparing the crabs food in let alone our own a potential toxin hazard and so should be avoided.

It sounds like everyone here is well informed in various health topics. I just wanted to chime in and add that sometimes, despite what we know, we can't always do it all....I love to cook, and I love farm-to-table, I doubly love to eat, and on top of it I am very well educated on the benefits of eating organic and not overly processed food, however I can not afford to do that. What I can afford is to only use green products and so that is the choice I make. I think what it is all about is doing the best for yourself and being knowledgable about the choices you're making, not whatever someone else is doing for themselves. Unfortunately we are surrounded by outside factors that have the potential to harm our bodies. I find it ironic that we are taught by "the man" what is healthy for us or what will make us sick, only years down the road to find out that after a decade of testing the healthy alternative in fact harms us in other ways. Don't feed the fear! If we do the best we can and live to our highest personal potential then that's all we can do and we will still thrive! I'll continue to use our microwave from time to time, cook on my stainless steel pans, eat non organic apples and take medication with side effects. But I will do so with acceptance of myself This thread sure was an interesting read with my Saturday morning coffee!

What about FROZEN shrimp? Does that still contain bacteria?

@JG, I have done frozen raw shrimp in the past and yes the shrimp still contains bacteria so it is imperative to wash your hands before and after feeding the crabs this food item.
