Feeding Seaweed to the crabbies

Post by Guest » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:45 am

I've tried feeding my crabbies some seaweed from Maine Coast sea vegetables. They don't seem to be very interested in it. I mixed some dulse with butternut squash and flax seeds. Then I tried some alaria soaked in salt water. My third attempt was to mix some chopped bladderwack with red and yellow bell peppers. The squash was the most sucessful of the 3 attempts. I would have thought they'd go nuts for it. Does anyone have a sucessful seaweed suggestion? I noticed on Julia Crabs site she often mixed seaweed and fruit together.

Oh, here I am! I've had success with my crabs eating pieces of seaweed dry in the food dish, mixed in to a kibble of fruits and other things they like, and also reconstituted and then mixed with other things. If you leave some dried in a dish, it'll pick up some of the humidity in the air and they may start picking at it after a couple of days. As long as it doesn't get moldy, there's no reason you can't leave bits of dried seaweed in the tank. There are a few items I do that with, seaweed and flowers, mostly, and they seem to enjoy the stuff more as it ages in the tank.To see how to reconstitute the seaweed, see:http://epicureanhermit.com/index.php?op ... &Itemid=25

Here's a question for you is there a difference between the seaweed grown on the east coaast to that grown on the west coast? I found a couple of west coast seaweed sites, they have a few different seaweeds listed there.http://www.seaweed.nethttp://www.ohsv.n ... fault.html

Just like on land, different oceans have different ecosystems. It would also be a choice of the farmer, and what his market prefers. If it's a crop, it will be up to the farmer what he grows. If it's wild, it has to do with different species in different ecological niches. As far as the crabs are concerned, seaweed is seaweed. I recommend only against hijiki because it has high levels of arsenic.

I bought some dried Algae from petdiscounters before. The crabbies seemed to like it.

Kelp and seaweed is very good for hermies. There are several varieties listed on the edible foods list of epicureanhermit.com. Such things should be a regular part of their diet, they provide lots of important trace minerals, including (but far from limited to) being a natural source of iodine.
