I was looking at some different salt brands, and I noticed all the Api says it is for freshwater fish. It is cheaper than the Instant Ocean I've been using, but is it okay to use? It says it is made from evaporated sea water, but not to use it in marine aquariums. I don't know why. What do you think?

I have used both, the Api was the first because I couldn't find the other. My crabs were fine I used it for years. Just started using instant ocean this past year.

That's good to know. The Api is less than half the price and makes over 100 gallons compared to the Instant Ocean that only makes 10 gallons according to their instructions.

I seen other stories that API salt is not safe? Is that true? I am strictly currently using instant ocean marine salt and I would not change to be on the safe side

I used it for years, my crabs were fine. bought the instant ocean cause the pet store didn't have the other..either will last you a long time! I only change my waters about once every 3 days and my bowls are about inch deep, my crabs never go in anything deeper, I have put bowls in deeper than that they don't go near them, clean as a whistle that water is!

If memory serves me correctly either is fine but You have to use more of the API to get the salt strength required. I have used both but it seems they prefer the IO brand. I will see if I can locate the thread with the different salts and directions.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I wasn't sure about it being for fresh water fish. I wanted to make sure it wasn't something different from what you guys have used. I thought the package sounded a bit silly saying it was made from sea water but couldn't be used in a salt water aquarium. Now I'm thinking maybe it isn't strong enough for marine fish if mixed according to directions. Now I have to decide if it's worth saving a little money.

@Susie, the difference between API and aquarium salts meant specifically for marine aquariums is that API is actually missing alot of the mineral content that the marine aquarium salt mixes included so long story short the fresh water aquarium salts wont support marine life because they are not all inclusive salt mixes.
