how to mix Instan Ocean

Post by jasonmom » Fri Aug 23, 2013 1:00 pm

I bought some Instant Ocean sea salt. I'm pretty sure I've read that others on here that use this brand. The directions state to mix 1/2cup of the salt per gallon of water. So is this the correct mixture for my hermits? Can I mix up the salt water in a gallon of spring water and then save it to continue using as I clean their waters? How long should it stay OK?Also, I had no idea the Instant Ocean Sea Salt was so expensive. How much do you guys pay for it?

Here is the link to different salt water mixtures. The mixture will last a long time. And yes it is kinda pricey, I don't remember how much I paid for mine but it last a long time.

I pay $10 for a box. It lasts forever. I mix it to the directions - 1/2 c per gal for their salt water bowl. I mix the salt water with RO (50/50) for my spray bottle. The full strength seemed too salty and left residue when I used it in the sprayer. I mix up a gallon at a time and only mix more when it's gone. You can also get Instant Ocean pretty cheap on Amazon.

I use IO(Instant Ocean) and its 8tbl spoons to one gallon to make full strength sea water which exotics like E's need.I mix one gallon at a time and it usually lasts two months though it has to be refridgerated because it will spoil if not.IO isnt expensive at all where I live as I was able to purchase a 50gal bag for twenty dollars at my local mom and pop shop, the ten gal box usually runs seven dollars and the twenty gallon box usually runs twelve to fifteen.Oceanic marine salt runs about ten dollars more than IO where I live so getting a five gallon box of Oceanic usually runs twenty dollars.

Yikes, I paid $25 for enough salt to make 10 gallon. Thanks for letting me know about refridgerating it. What's RO? Am I supposed to use salt water in my sprayer?

If you mixed your sub with salt water you really don't have to add the salt to the spray bottle. Water evaporates salt doesn't so your salt is still in your sub even though the water may evaporate leaving it a little dry. In fact I use sand and don't mix it with salt cuz there isn't anything in there that can mold. If you have coco fiber it is suggested that use mix it with salt cuz overtime it can. Also keep the box somewhere that it can't draw moisture or your fine salt will harden/cake.Any additions to your tat can always be removed and cleaned if need be.Also you can make smaller amounts. I only make a 16oz bottle at a time so I don't have to worry about it spoiling and that lasts about 2 weeks for me cuz I only have 4 crabs.
