Crab Keeps Burying and Unburying

Post by Guest » Thu Sep 08, 2005 4:20 am

Hey! My largest hermit crab duncan had started to show signs of digging about three or four days ago. As of two days ago, he stayed under for good! I was excited because he's never showed any signs of ever wanting to dig, and it was great that he was going to molt! But now he's unburried himself and is hiding in the hermie hut. Obviously, two days is way to fast of a molt for a hermit his size, so what's up? Why does he keep digging like that?

I think sometimes they can bury and come back up a few times before they stay down for good. I have 2 that did this for about a week or so, now they have been down for 2 weeks. Maybe he was just resting and conserving energy... I bet he will dig in for good soon. Good luck!

Crab Keeps Burying and Unburying

I have had more than one crab do the "trial run" thing before actually staying down for good. My most recent molter, Susan, took weeks before he decided to stay under the sand. Make sure your substrate is deep enough and moist enough to encourage the crab to stay under, and then try not to think about it after that.
