my turn to panic

Post by Laurie LeAnn » Sun Jan 25, 2015 1:47 pm

I'm only seeing 2 crabs when I have 3! Not seeing really any places where they dug down, except today my largest was digging then quit. So I don't know if the one went down before him and he was following and gave up or what happened? I m second guessing myself did I throw him out w the moss? But then I'm thinking no I saw all three yesterday and I didn't change it..I'm not hearing any digging either. I'm in panic mode..

Sorry I'm not any help but I'm with you. I know where all but one crab is. I have no idea at all where he has gone down. All I can do is hope he's fine. He was in a painted shell, he changed into a bigger unpainted one then was gone. I am afraid to do to much in the tank because I d not want the e e to cave in on him but on the same note I don't even see a hole....

I have been crabbing since 2009.. I have always seen mounds of substrate , heard digging e t..this time it's like poof he is gone?? The lids are glass to heavy for even my biggest crab to lift and tank to tall to get to top. When I change out the moss I take all of them out of the caddy so I know he wasn't in there, I know I saw him the other day cause he the crab that is my scardey cat.. He flips back if any one comes near him..he's about hall dollar size or bigger, you can't miss him.

my turn to panic

Up date: I don't recommend doing this but because of the meds I take it causes short term memory and " mind games " with me like second guessing myself..I went looking for him. I had to make sure that I DID NOT TOSS HIM OUT WITH THE MOSS OR PUT HIM IN THE BASEMENT WITH OTHER DECOR! I was having panic attacks that goes along w the junk I have that goes with meds I take that causes me all this headache..well I found him! He hadn't started doing anything yet, I got a small Tupperware type container and put it over him in a tilted slight way so he still has a air pocket and covered it back up. Now I can rest. I was having bad dreams over it..finding half way dead cats in closets?? So I now just pray that he will pull through. January/ is usually the molt season here in my house but my biggest guy usually goes first, this one threw me a curve ball

I'm thrilled you at least have peace of mind as to where he is. Still no sign of mine and I am more worried at the ones who like to sleep next to the heat mat on the side of the tank. The temp in my tank is 75 and 75 percent humidity. It is 80 plus degrees where they are by the mat. One is a purple pincher the other is an Ecuadorian.... they are all relatively new except Pinky who is a happy climbing Ecuadorian. I hope to pick 2 more Ecuadorian tomorrow from the same batch as the others. Then my tank is complete. I wanted to add it is 80 and 80 up in the canopy of the tank. Where Pinky hangs out.

Good job Laurie! For future reference, check under their food dishes, water, etc. Mine love to "go under" which sometimes makes me crazy! I have 18 or so crabbies so it's almost impossible to know who's up and who's down. I'm always glad when I see them again!
In a years time and my 2nd childhood with Hermit Crabs, I now have 23 Hermies!! Purple Pinchers, Indos, Violas, Blueberry's, E's and one lone Strawberry!
