Lonely for my crabs in MI

Post by JeanneG » Mon Jan 27, 2014 6:10 am

I have six hermies, varying from golf-ball sized to dime sized, and they are ALL underground right now. I have some basic food out for them from the HCP, but have stopped putting out fresh, as they are not out to eat it. I have heard some occasional scraping, but can't help but worry if they are doing alright. We have had very cold temps, and my surface tank temp stays about 80 degrees. I hope it is warm enough in the underground. My golf ball sized crab has been buried since mid-October, and the others followed one by one. Just need some reassurance, I guess, and thank you all for the gret info on this site. Jeanne

Mine are much the same, this time of year I feel like I have sand for pets rather than crabs. It is sad but I know they will return soon, usually I have a mass molt or a mass reemergence near the equinox. It is so hard to wait!

the longest mine I have given is 4 months then I went digging and I found a dead one. he was good sized one. I have found them in collapsed tunnels trying to dig themselves out to, so they might be trying to dig themselves out if it's been a long time. use your own judgement as what to do..

Thanks all! I sniff the tank regularly, and it smells fine, but I will dig around by mid-Feb. Their names are (in order of size), Max, Howie, Princess,Turbo, Elvis and Teeny.
