Crabbies on a...plane?

Post by Guest » Tue Jun 06, 2006 12:19 pm

So, I'm going down to Myrtle Beach in a few weeks, where I will no doubt spend half of my time in shops cooing at hermit crabs. Ofcourse, I'm way up north in Minnesota, so if I end up buying one, does anyone know anything about taking them on planes? I suppose I could find some sort of little travel cooler, like someone did, and put them in there, but what about the x-ray scan-y thing? Anyone have ideas?

It might be worth your while to call ahead and make an inquiry but as they allow dogs and cats in the cabin as long as they carry ons fit within or under the seat then they should have no problem with a little crab or two.Maybe you could use a softsided insulated bag. I have one that fits about 4 cans of soda laying sideways. It's pretty durable so it should hold up to a hermie's scratching and it would hold the temp well I imagine. Just make sure to bring a damp sponge to add and maybe something to nibble on.

I was consdering the same thing, but found that my airline Southwest doesn't allow pets on board, just service animals.I doubt I could pass one off as a "Seeing Eye Hermit Crab."If they do let you, you could base it on how to pack hermit crabs for shipment - wet paper towel for humidity, etc.Obviously, not in the luggage, as it's depressurized and freezing. And declare them in the carry on, so they don't get x-rayed.

If you get permission to bring them aboard, make sure to get the name of the person that okays it in case anyone challenges you when you arrive. You're more likely to convince them if you can tell them when you called and who you spoke with.Have fun!!

If you're pretty young, or you have a younger sibling that will be traveling with you, just bring them in a cute little hot pink KK, with all the stupid little things they sell to put in KKs, and just take them on board. One crabkeeper on another board says she saw a little kid with a KK full of hermit crabs just get on the plane, and all the flight attendants were oohing and aahing over her little pets. Innocence and naivete are the keys to success.
