FMR Hermit crab food and treat?

Post by Zooylew » Wed Apr 01, 2015 2:40 pm

So I went to the pet store today to get my male rat blaze a friend (He's very happy now) anyway I felt bad for my sister who had no money so I picked her Hermits and My one hermit a treat. No usually I check online first but this seems pretty safe I just want to make sure and was wondering if they like the treat if the food was okay too? so here's what in the treat. papaya, coconut, pineapple, sea salt, banana chips, apples, Mango's, rolled oats, and wheat germ.

Those foods sound perfectly healthy but look out for preservitives.

If that's all it says on the back your ok. There are bird treats that are similar you can feed or just plain Jane human food. Like Apple banana , other fruits on the safe food list.

FMR Hermit crab food and treat?

That's all it says... Well usually we don't buy any pre made food for them because I'm a worry wart and we already have had to loss's a few months ago. I sure it wasn't due to foo but more being in painted shells and being so stressed. usually they get Veggies, a small piece of fruit, and a piece of meat or sea food. Right now they have shrimp, kale, and strawberry. Thanks for the help!

FMR Hermit crab food and treat?

@Zooylew, the FMR mixed fruit treat is fine to use but the FMR pelleted food isn't really the best quality food its essentially rabbit food that has been repackaged.I know for fact that the old recipe for the FMR food back in the 90's used to list alfalfa as the first ingredient and that is the primary ingredient in rabbit food, sneaky labeling and a price increase and bingo you have a hermitcrab specific item that unsuspecting crabbers will buy no questions asked.I just happened to notice that this food smelled strangely similar to rabbit feed my sister used to give her Norwegian Giant White rabbit Charlie and just did the research.lolI have used the FMR mixed fruit treat and pelleted food in the past when I couldn't find anything else and needed something to alternate with the fresh fruits and veggies and my crabs seemed to like both the mixed fruit treat and the pellets though I found soaking the pellets in some of their fresh water to soften them seemed to encourage the crabs to eat the food more.

FMR Hermit crab food and treat?

I looked at what was in them first and thought that the food did sound a bit iffy so I just grabbed the treat because it sounded fine. Also! The pink shelled Crab that I asked a bit ago about has Finally come up and By the looks of it has molted so No worries of her/him being stuck! Yay! But last time I checked she was eating and drinking a lot so I think we are in the safe zone with her. Thank you all for the help!

FMR Hermit crab food and treat?

@Zooylew, your welcome its what we are here for.The FMR hermitcrab food used to be pretty high quality and was the best you could get in a commercial blend then sometime around 2000 to 2002 the company went through a change of ownership so the quality of their staff and their product took a nose dive, their customer support used to be the best in the industry they really cared out the hermitcrabs they sold and the products they were delivering then all of the sudden their customer support became very very lack luster you can call the number now and all you'll get is some pretty basic and sometimes wrong information after waiting on hold for a couple of hours. You can tell if a hermitcrab has recently molted because they typically display sharp nail tips on each leg and lots of stae(hair).Molting is a very good sign because that lets us as the care takers know that we are doing a good job and that the crab feels safe enough with us to allow itself to enter into its most vulnerable state while in our care.I remember the crab you are referring to and the fact that it appears to have molted signifies that it is able to move around and extend outside of the shell which would suggest that it is not painted in or stuck in another fashion.

She has definitely molted. I was so happy that she hadn't been stuck in it. I think shes just being stubborn. Thanks for all the help!
