A bathtub for Azazul

Post by Keg » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:24 am

I was reading where Crabber85 and Geranium said that the usual little crab pool with steps is not big enough. I can't find that reference at the moment. But ok, I admit my water tub is not big enough for a good bath.So I dusted off a big lizard pool made out of ceramic, I think. It is about 6, or maybe 8 inches across and an inch deep. I was reluctant to use it in the past because I thought it would take up too much space.Azazul looked at it suspiciously for three days. Then she found her way in. She displayed a curiousness, and a sense of wonder, I think. It's the sort of mood that she had when she saw her first polished turbo shell. It took about thirty minutes to find her way in, after the decision was made to explore. She spent about thirty minutes in the water. When she came out, I saw evidence of a joyful crab. She was standing tall and looking directly at me. Then she climbed her personal tree (a vertical mesquite branch) and hung on the side, like a flag. This is looking directly at me, as a reward for doing something right.Well, the next day, for the first time, she made direct and prolonged eye contact with her companion crab (Hellboy), who lives in the adjoining crabitat. I am guessing she finally felt good enough to be social, even though she doesn't really know how. It was very cute. Helboy has to climb his tree to get in any kind of angle to see Azazul. He was climbing on two separate branches today to get a good view. This was a very special day for everyone involved.Hellboy will get a lizard sized tub as soon as I get around to it.****Hellboy was making some remarkable high pitched (and poignant) squeals, if I am placing the sound correctly.Azazul went back and took another visit to the tub, then went up her tree. Hellboy is on his tree. I think I detect antenae wiggling in Azazul... Hellboy is far more enthusiastic with the wiggling and visiting.Things are going well. It's the first signs of an inter-crabitat relationship. Especially with Azazul; She has had some awareness of the other crab, but this is the first real effort and interest. Certainly it's the first positive interaction.

Fabulous! I remember the first visits mine made to the larger pools when I first introduced them. They really do seem to enjoy them. Glad your two seem to be starting to bond and become friendly!

You could use the Gladware or Ziplock plastic microwave tubs. They come in many different sizes and are a lot cheaper.
