Stick your finger in it, does it hold form? Is he deep in the sub?

No, I have been trickling water around the area, but don't want to poor water close to him. The area around him is moist, so I was hoping he would tunnel to the moist side, but he hasn't moved. He is about an inch from the bottom of the tank I can see his claws through the glass on the back of the tank.

What type of aragonite sand is best?

The more I read the more it seems I should use playsand for substrate. Does it need to be rinced? When I stop using calcium sand, what do I give them for calcium? And is it advisable to use marine water to moisten thesand? Thanks!!!

Yes, playsand and EcoEarth are the only advisable substrates. I have not ever felt the need to rinse the sand. I do hydrate the sand to sand castle consistency with dechlorinated aquarium salt water to help prevent mold. You can use either salt or just fresh dechlorinated water. To prevent salt build up, if I add water to the sub after the initial hydration, I use fresh dechlor water. Calcium sand is dangerous as a substrate. If the calcium sand is not colored, you can use it as a food source in a dish. Also cuttle bone (bird section), crushed oyster shells, egg shells, are all calcium sources that can be used in a food dish.

Be careful you can stress your crab out from changing his things so much in a short period of time. He is digging to get away from it all. To much stress will cause a crab to become weak, drop his shell, or limbs. You get this substrate thing figured out and humidity you need to do hands off for the next month. Just feed and water. Lots of high protein foods.

I recommend absolutely no aragonite sandsI use quickrite playsand (. 50 pounds) for$6 You get a lot for a good price. Get that from either lowes or home depot. Any store that's for hardware And mix with Eco earth. Get the 3 brick Eco earth. And mix 5:1 ratio
