Hermit crabs in College?

Post by gsgirl19(: » Mon Nov 03, 2014 11:54 am

So: I am going off to college soon, and I would really like to take my crabbies with me. My first choice said hermit crabs may be ok to take, but probably won't allow a 20 gal. tank. Any suggestions? I have 5 hermit crabs and most of them are medium/large and two smallish ones. Also my college is only 1 hour away so travelling there shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know if you could manage two ten gallons since the school wont let you have a twenty but that might be an option though its not one that will last long your crabs are getting much too big for a ten gallon even splitting them up its going to be a tight squeeze.Do you have to live on campus or can you commute if you can I would suggest just leaving the crabs where they are though I understand that most colleges make you live on campus for your first two years don't know exactly why but they do..

I do have to live on campus for at least 2 years...do you think that a tall octogonal tank may work?

That depends on the foot print of the tank, if the tank doesn't have a large foot print then that equals less molting space at the bottom of the tank which could lead to bad or incomplete molts due to overcrowding.

What worries me is that if I were to move my setup to another state or even another residence, it could radically change the temperature and humidity. It would take time and care to adjust. Then there's people who insist on smoking. And others wearing perfume based on isopropyl alcohol that stings the crab.

I think the crabs will be fine as long you get their tank set up asap when you get there and when traveling you can wrap towels around their crab tank with hand warmers by it it to keep it warm.

Another thing you should keep in mind is when they spray for bugs/pests or if they use a different method. What about if you leave them where they are, stay on campus, but go check on them every other day (if your allowed to leave campus)?
