what to do if power goes out in the winter

Post by crazycrabber » Sat Jun 28, 2014 3:47 am

my power goes out alot, and since herrmit crabs need a humid environment, i am wondering what i would be able to do to keep the heat tropical, so they wouldn't die. would i bring them to my dad's lab, or is there something easier? i am asking what to do in the winter.

We typically recommend a generator to our members who live in areas subject to harsh winters and subsequent power outages.

Take a look around Home Depot and see if they have a solution for heating your home in an emergency. For instance, there are radiators that are heated by natural gas cannisters, I believe. You need to heat the house anyway. That would help, as long as they're specifically designed for indoor use. This has some advantages over a generator... Generators are full of gas and oil. They have to be kept outside and they collect dirt, create outgassing problems, not to mention the fine points of maintenance. And you have to keep cans of gas stored in a shed somewhere. On the other had, they do provide for the possibility of running light bulbs and phone re-chargers.If you have a gas stove, fire it up. Put a pot of spring water on to boil for good measure. In the winter the room humidity is low anyway, it can use it. Note that this will eventually ruin the pot by coating it with residue from the spring water - I've done it.

thanks you two for your advice, but i just remembered that my dad has an entomology and ecology lab, with generators, i could take them there. they would know what to do, they specialize in those kinds of creatures.
