Plastic Tank

Post by jordan51ayers » Tue Sep 09, 2014 6:49 am

Are plastic tanks okay for hermit crabs? I've had my 2 PPs in a 15 gallon plastic tank for about a month and a half now and they seem okay. it stays at 75 degrees and 80-85% humidity with 5 inches of substrate and salt and freshwater baths. they seem very happy and Scottie Pippen has even molted. I was just wondering if there are any negative effects of a plastic tank?

15 gallons and with the temperature and humidity staying where you said, it is fine. The big problem is finding a heater (UTH) that would work properly without risk on plastic. If your temp stays 75 or higher without you're fine but winter may present problems. This would be why glass is a better choice.

Thanks for the response! I have a UTH mounted on the right back side with 3/4 of the heater underneath substrate level. This properly warms the tank while allowing for ventilation and hopefully keeping it safe for the plastic. Glad to see I'm doing good for my crabs!
