How did this happen and will they be ok?

I installed climbing mat stuff for crabs on two sides of my crabs tank. I then found them this morning having made their way onto the mesh like lid(that is insulated with serain wrap). They are now very happy but on the bottom of it. I have one small and one medium crab so they cant push the lid of but can they get down? this happened even though the climbing background was an inch from the top.

Hence your problem an inch from the top. Depending on size of crab they can and will stretch to reach something if they want to. My crabs are a little larger and can climb from the fake plant to the top which is about an inch and a half maybe two. If you don't want them on the lid you may have to cut part of the mat leaving a larger space between it and the lid. Sometimes crabs are also smart enough to pinch the sealant in the corners and climb up as well. I let mine crawl on the lid if they want to.Most crabs if they got up will come back down but keep an eye on them and if they don't come down (in my judgment) within a day you may have to help them. Simply take the lid off carefully and then put it upside down (so the crabs are now right side up) and they should let you pick them up or if not lay it on the floor and let them crawl off. Don't try to pull them off the lid because it could lead to pulling a leg off if they have a tight grip on the lid.
