Most of what you can buy in stores marketed for hermit crabs is bad, has chemicals that are toxic. So, no, not even once in a while. If you want dry food, go to the Hermit Crab Patch or the Hermit Crab Addiction Store for safe foods.

This fall go out side to a safe non pesticides area and gather tons of maple leaves that ate super dried out. I look them over to make sure they are not bug infested. Then take them and soak them in their water and rinse in their water , I stick them in a box and set by the heat vent to dry. Then if we have to be gone I use lots of dead leaves, I also do this to maple bark, I boil it dry it then I grate it up into a powder. I always keep the little bone in there to. I try to leave things that I know won't mold in 2 days
