how to know if a crab is stuck in a painted shell

The most common way to know if a crab is actually painted into its shell is to give the crab a lot of different natural shells it will attempt to switch but because its stuck it wont be able to.I know of a couple of people who bought hermitcrabs who'd been painted into their shells and only found out because they were watching the crab try to switch shells and noticed that a portion of the abdomen was actually adhered to the interior of the shell.
