Annual tank maintenance day today.
Since I have such a large enclosure 120gallons the substrate only has to be replaced once a year which has been up for about four months admittedly but the local home improvement stores have been out of play sand since the end of pool season, I think people were stocking up in preparations for the coming winter have kept the stores stocks depleted.Anyway I'm planning on changing out the substrate as soon as humanly possible for now the play sand thats in the tank still smells and looks good so the presence of harmful bacteria is at a minimum if it weren't you'd be able to tell as there would be a foul odor coming from the sand.I'm about to embark on an hours worth of work getting all the tank decor out, removing the surface occupants and then scraping the lop quarter inch of substrate to remove any old food or fecal matter, then I will be carefully re-hydrating the substrate where it has dried out a little too much and then putting every thing back in.I've already sterilized the empty spare shells back in Dec, I took them all out carefully checking each one for an occupant and then boiled them for fifteen minutes in some of the crabs dechlorinated drinking water, after the shells got done boiling I drained them and let them air dry on a paper towel, I even took pictures for my upcoming how-to book which I hope to get published in the next year.Well now to get to work.lol
Hi I have autism so I tend to answer questions very directly and with little emotion so please don't think I'm being rude.
