My last crab post (for now)
This post belongs in at least three sections. If the admins wish to move it, I will not be offended. On November 27th, three inches of ice fell here at Shadow's Reach, coupled with 12 inches of snow and 65 m.p.h. sustained winds. The blizzard snapped over 9,700 power poles in South Dakota within two hours. I lost power around midnight. With no power, I lost heat and water as well. It was the next morning before conditions lessened to where I could evacuate to a shelter. By that time, the interior temperature of my house was sitting at 22 degrees Fahrenheit. In spite of my insulation of the tank and everything I tried, all 23 of my crabs froze to death. Power returned late Friday night, and I just returned home Saturday morning. I ask your pardon in advance; under the circumstances, I will most likely not be as active on the board for a while as I have been in the past. I wish you all well, and thank you for the excellent advice and support I have received. H.C. Schirtzinger

Im so very sorry! I did not realize how bad the conditions had been in your area. Certainly a sad day, for many reasons. I know your heart must be broken over your losses, mine sure would be too. I hope your home didn't sustain much damage. We will miss you... and look forward to seeing you return someday. We'll be here if you need us.

I am so sorry. I can only hope nothing like that happens here. I have no heat in my room but am trying to keep the stove going all the time. Its going to snow tomorrow. I just hope you don't think this is your fault, which I am sure you don't, because it in no way is. I hope things get better.

I thought of you when I heard about the power outages. I worried about your hermies. I'm sorry the worst happened . Note to those who didn't hear about the storm--as he said, around 10,000 power poles were broken, 10,000 miles of power lines. 150 communities were without power for several days, and countless farms and rural homes. Around 50 communites are still without power, and some of the rural homes will not have power until January. Farmers are having trouble providing water for their livestock, families are having to leave to stay with relatives elsewhere, the Governor is trying to get federal disaster relief. All in all, it's really bad. Here are some news reports: http://www.ksfy.com/news/index.cfm?ID=12&Marker=16The toll on pets has not been mentioned---cats, dogs, ferrets, and rabbits should be OK, if they have proper shelter, but who knows how many exotic pets have been killed by the cold?

I am so very, very sorry. I don't know what else to say. I know how proud you were of your huge crabitat and your hermies, and this is just so sad. This could have happened to any one of us up north, and I will say a prayer for you and hope to see you back on LHC someday in the near future. *HUGS*

I am so very sorry for your losses. It's heartbreaking to lose them so, but I am happy to hear that you are okay. Take care of yourself and your family right now. We'll be thinking of you until you return. This is going off topic but everyone, with so much natural disaster going on in the world, please set aside a few bucks to invest in a portable generator. You may never need to use it but you will be truly grateful for it if you ever do.Peace, GreyTake care.

I'm sorry, too. It's so heartbreaking to lose pets like that, much less to lose your sense of place because of having to live in a shelter for a while. Good luck to you, and I hope you can get back on your feet soon.Best - Gail

I, too, am sorry to hear about your losses, Grey, I know I'd be heartbroken if I were in your place. I'm glad that you and your family came thru everything ok, and I hope that you won't give up on hermit crabs. Be well, stay healthy, and remember Callahan's First Rule.

Ronin, I wish I had the words to express how awful I feel for you. Please know that you're most welcome here any time, and there's always a seat in the Leper for you.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that, and I know where you are coming from. We ALWAYS lose power sometime during the winter, (once on Christmas Day, had to eat at the only place open, a convenience store!) and I am already anxious. Most of my pets need electricity to survive. Fish, snakes, turtles, hermies. I hope conditions improve soon, and you can get some new crabby friends.
