HELP!! CRABBY SURFACE MOLT!!!

Post by JediMasterThrash » Fri May 10, 2013 12:52 pm

If i get a surface molt, I put them in a small cage or container full of moist sand and then put it back into the tank. In the moist sand dig out a deep pit in the middle to place the crab. This keeps them isolated and secure, and at the same conditions as the main tank.I'd tried other in-place methods, like putting a half-bottle around the crab. But the other crabs just topple anything like that with ease.

Is the crab still in the shell though and do you have an ISO you can move to? Can you also copy, paste and answer the questions from here so we can identify why he surface molted and didn't bury?As JMT mentioned, you can ISO intank but you'll either need something deep enough that the crabs can't turn sideways to scale (they have a greater reach when they stand on the walking legs on one side and reach with opposite pincher) or you'll need a hole punched lid to keep them out. To lift a shelled crab, be careful not to change the shell's position because the crab can suffer dented exo if he rests on his soft body rather than on his ab. To move a streaker, slip a spoon into the substrate below him andgently cup your other hand over him. Again, try not to change position. Make sure his exo goes with him. After a day or two rest, he'll begin to eat it to replace lost nutrients and calcium. The pop bottle method is successful if you cut the bottom off a 2-liter, set the cylinder around the crab and push till it hits bottom. That prevents others from digging under the sides of or tipping it. Some people just remove the cap but I cut some of the neck off too for better visibility, climate and access if I need it.
