HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I don't know how to know if they are trying to molt, down there hiding (this is my guess as only got them 23June), or dead. I'm trying so hard not to mess with them. How do you guys know which ones to pull out and put in isolation tank?

Usually, digging and decreased activity are signs of molting. I suggest using the technique that can be found HERE

Many people no longer isolate molters. I never have and have had no problems. I would never be able to catch them in time if I tried!!

right now my 2 have slowed down on activity, and they keep digging new holes then fill them in..idk why that it.. but they keep getting right next to each other durning the day and do there own thing at night i watched them till 1am last night... i think there getting ready...i think...

I never isolate molters anymore as my tank size 129gallons allows for a more natural approach where I just let my crabs do their thing and so far everyone has done alright with this arrangement.I only ever isolate molters if I've accidentally uncovered them and they are still soft but other than that my iso is for new purchases and emergencies.

If I had a 10 gallon tank (which I do), I would isolate a molter just to be in the safe side. The other crabs could go cannibalistic from what I've heard.

I only iso a molter when they first come up and that is because I have a bully that will try to eat them. I leave them in the iso for a day or two with lots of good foods and then everyone gets a bath so they smell the same and it makes everything kosher, been doing this since 2009
