Petco carries Marineland tanks and PetSmart carries Aqueon. There is a slight difference between the two products and that difference is important when it comes to buying tank lids, especially the hinged glass ones.Tala wrote:When I mentioned the sale to my mom she was wondering what brands were going to be part of the deal-- I had no idea and I'm not particular about which kind so I was kinda like,

Looks like it's Aqueon, & I'll let her know, haha. Thanks for sharing!

Ah, I hadn't considered lids at all-- just figured I'd check my options if I decided to get one haha. What is the difference? Our newer 75 gallon tank has a hinged glass lid and I love it. It's a Top Fin, though. Is the sale going on at both stores?Crabinski wrote:

(EDIT: just finished some tank maintenance and noticed "Aqueon" on the cover, so I guess it's not a Top Fin, haha).
Now I'm confused, lol. I checked their websites to see if I could answer any of those questions and it looks like they each carry both Aqueon and Marineland. However both brands look extremely limited at Petco with mostly extra small tanks. Maybe Petco doesn't list their "sold in stores but not sold online" products on their website?
@hprmom did you notice if other brands were included, as well?

The sale at my local Petco is specifically on Aqueon products (see the first photo in my post verifying the sale). They do carry a very limited selection of other brands, as you noted mostly smaller tanks. They also carry the Aqueon "versa top" glass lids in sizes corresponding to Aqueon tanks.Tala wrote:Crabinski wrote:Now I'm confused, lol. My local Petsmart carries Aqueon, Marineland, Top Fin (the Petsmart store brand), and National Geographic, off the top of my head, and has a bigger selection of large size tanks (for example, we're considering a 46 gallon bow front). They also have ExoTerra terrariums in the larger sizes. Most of the "tank only" options are Top Fin; the other brands are "kits" including filters, lights, and/or stands. Staff at Petsmart told me that when they have their dollar sale, it is only on standard tank sizes, I didn't think to ask which brand.
Hope that helps!

Your pics were the reason I assumed Aqueon was the brand on sale but when I didn't see many online I started to wonder, haha. My bad! Just got Petco's email this morning and they are now selling Aqueon tanks, too. They had been exclusively a Marineland dealer but have just added Aqueons -- those are the only brands Petco carries as there is no "house" brand equivalent to PetSmart's Top Fin line. As far as available sizes go, the 55g, 40B and 29g tanks go quickly in store, leaving the 20L, 20g and 10g sizes.Tala wrote:Ah, I hadn't considered lids at all-- just figured I'd check my options if I decided to get one haha. I'm looking to upgrade to a 10g, and if I am reading ya'lls posts correctly...would a glass hinged-lid be the appropriate way to go? My crabbie does love his moisture!

We had a 10 gallon that had a screen lid and we wrapped the majority of it in plastic wrap and that worked great for holding moisture. We have a 75 gallon now with a glass hinged-lid and I definitely prefer it just because getting in and out of the tank for simple things is way easier than removing the entire lid (however the 10 gallon lid was really pretty easy to remove-- especially once I was able to consistently work the clips that hold it in place lol ). So yeah-- a glass lid would work, but its definitely not a necessity.Giner13 wrote:I'm looking to upgrade to a 10g, and if I am reading ya'lls posts correctly...would a glass hinged-lid be the appropriate way to go? What Tala said. I have a 10g and a 20g both with screen lids. The 10 just lifts off, but the 20 slides and clips in place. The sliding lid presents a bit of a problem, when the crabs are clinging upside down to the screen it's impossible to remove the lid for feeding/tank maintenance! Not as big a deal with the lift-off lid, though I imagine the locking lid is better for larger crabs who might be able to push up the lid and escape.Giner13 wrote:I'm looking to upgrade to a 10g, and if I am reading ya'lls posts correctly...would a glass hinged-lid be the appropriate way to go? I had my 10g lid wrapped in plastic wrap until one of my guys got between the plastic and the lid at the edge. He was fine, just annoyed both of us! Now I have gallon ziploc bags just laying on top of the screen and that seems to work fine for holding in humidity. In fact, since it's humid where I live, I can adjust the humidity by removing (or replacing) a ziploc. I also have a towel draped over each tank as lazy "insulation" for the heating pads, it works but it cuts out a lot of light (the front of the tank stays uncovered). My next tank will be a lot bigger so I want to go to a hinged glass lid for ease of access, but am not sure if it will wind up being *too* humid in there (I live in Florida)!
If you have the space and funds, may I humbly suggest you jump up to the biggest size you think you're going to want? I have only been crabbing since January, we inherited the 10 and 20 tanks and it's amazing how fast you run out of room! Once we put in all the necessities, the 10 barely has any open surface area for digging on the ground, although adding little second level areas helped a LOT (a moss pit and shell shop, which freed up the ground beneath them). A 20L tank wouldn't take up much more room than a 10, and you'd have more flexibility in setting it up (and more room if you're thinking about adding crabs... our 10 is crowded with just two crabs!). Originally I was planning to get a 29g, but with the sale I am looking at bigger and bigger options!

I agree about possibly upgrading to the biggest size you anticipate wanting-- we were going for a 45 gallon initially (but I didn't complain when we ended up getting the 75 gallon lol).

Thanks ya'll!! I will check my options when I go check out the sale. Plus the needed decor & newer water dishes as opposed to the shells I currently have. I'll keep space in mind as I do want to add a second crabbie

I want to upgrade too just for fun but I've got a trip coming up and a recent car accident prevents me from spending even 50 bucks to go up a few gallons ): I guess I'll have to wait until the next saleTala wrote:When I mentioned the sale to my mom she was wondering what brands were going to be part of the deal-- I had no idea and I'm not particular about which kind so I was kinda like,

Since you've got until May 7 I hope you'll have luck with your hubby & the 29 gal.
I'm trying to convince myself it's okay to get one because it's such a good deal-- but I don't NEED one right now so I'm torn. BUT THOSE PRICES THOUGH! lol

SAMEEEE. We're flying out to see my 93 year old (great-great) aunt at the beginning of May-- and regardless I just don't have the extra money to buy something that I know ill *eventually* use but don't need now or in the foreseeable future, lol.DarthKrab wrote: I want to upgrade too just for fun but I've got a trip coming up and a recent car accident prevents me from spending even 50 bucks to go up a few gallons ): I guess I'll have to wait until the next sale

At least we know the sale isn't a "one time thing", so there will be more chances when you are ready. When I get in a situation like that, I remind myself "this is not my last chance EVER"!

I picked up a 40B and a hinged screened lid, to be covered in plastic wrap. Now all I need is more inspiration pictures to start collecting new decor!
