Hi Pam, I've been crabbing since January, too. :) The footprint of the tank is the length x width. This determines the surface area or what I call "square inches on the ground". The volume or gallons a tank can hold is calculated length x width x height, and different tanks can have the same volume but different dimensions. So you can have a "20 high" tank that measures approximately 24L x 12W x 16H; a "20 extra high" that measures 20 x 10 x 24; and a "20 long" at 30L x 12W x 12H, all of which hold 20 gallons. Of the three, the 20L has the "long footprint".

For crabbers the priority is surface area, to allow more room for digging. A 20L has 360 sq. inches on the ground, while a 20 high has 288. The 20L is only 12 inches high, so keep in mind that when you put 6" of substrate in there, you'll have 6" above the ground... just like you do with your 10 gallon, so you already know what that looks like. :) A 29 gallon tank has the EXACT same footprint as a 20L, but is taller (18"), so you gain no advantage in terms of surface area, but more height if you want to decorate and have climbing areas.

I've been researching what size tank I want next pretty intensely (I have a very small house!), so I'm just passing on what I'm learning! Hope it helps.

P.S. If you have a Petco near you, they are currently having a "dollar per gallon" sale, which means you can pick up a tank a lot cheaper than regular prices you'll probably find at Petsmart. Right now the 20g at my Petsmart is around $32, while the Petco sale is $20.

Oh, that makes sense!

So glad I got the answer so quickly because we are headed out today to buy a bigger tank. We were thinking a 20g but I see Petco has a sale, a dollar a gallon. I hope it's still on because then we will jump to a 40g. Yay!!

Thank you!!

hprmom, I just noticed your reply after I posted.

Thank you so much for all the info. Yes, our 10g is quite full of sand!! I am so excited to go bigger & I think our crabs will be too. We do have to drive 2 hours to the nearest petco but plan to make a day of it!

Thanks again to everyone who has  been so helpful!!

The 40 gallon has a nice footprint. I also like the 56, but it's not included in the sale.

I might have to go snag me a couple of spare aquariums while this sale is happening!!

A 40B is a awesome tank for hermit crabs! Great choice. Congrats on the upgrade. We'd love to see pics when you are done.

I am so excited to give my guys so much more room BUT I have 2 molters in a 10g, & my 2 newbies are destressing in a 10g ISO. I don't think I should move the newbies into their new home until they are completely destressed, right? Also wondering how long to wait after molting before I move the 2 that are down under???

I would err on the side of caution and add them as they come up from molting. I would wait until at least two are ready before adding the first group.

That is what I thought about the molters but I am confused about the second part of your reply. Sorry, I didn't understand what you meant. :?: :?: :?:

What I'm trying to say is that you should add more than one crab at a time to the new tank. If you only have one crab ready to go into the new tank, I would hold off until at least one more is ready. That way you are not putting a single crab into the big tank. Leave it in the familiar old tank with his not-ready tribe until at least one more finishes molting. After the original pair is introduced to the main tank, you can add the remaining crabs as they finish molting--since the tank is now already occupied.

Did that make sense at all?

Since all of you here have been so helpful & I wasn't sure where to ask this question I will do it here. Hope that's ok.

I was reading the thread about water, chlorine, & other things in our water & read that well water is ok to use with hermit crabs as long as it has been tested as safe for humans. We moved last August to our new home & we have a well that was tested before we moved in & it is safe but my question is....is it safe for the crabs if we have a water softener? Anybody know?

I have been using bottled spring water....good, bad?

Thanks!!

I just now heard for the very first time, a chirp!! It made my night!! :D

I'm fairly new as well, but any water given to the hermit crabs has to be treated with a water conditioner to remove chlorine and ammonia. There's a safe food and water list that goes in to detail too.

Hi AleyedtoBuggy! Good to know I'm not the only one new here. I find myself second guessing every decision I make for my crabs these days.

Another question for anyone. The thread about water is locked so wasn't sure where to post these questions.

Is the Jungle Brand Aquarium Salt ok to use for their saltwater? If so, do I go with the directions on the back to make it?

Thank you! :)
