I'm noticing my crab boy picking/tearing up his sponge is this normal? Is he eating it? It is a sea sponge

I had a natural sponge in one of my pools and every time I changed out the water I noticed it was a little more messed up than last time. Then one night, I noticed one of my little crabs on top of it tearing it apart. Not sure if he was eating it but he definitely didn't like it's original shape lol.

Mine love to eat the natural sea sponge. It has something in it that they need. I read that on this site, however, I have forgotten what it is. Lol They eat as much sea sponge as they do regular food!
