New Tank

Post by madiem » Sun Jun 05, 2016 1:58 pm

I currently have three hermits under the sand, three above ground and more to come very soon. I bought a new tank today and need to transfer everything over to the new tank without disrupting the three under the sand. Is there any possible way?

Hello there! In my experience, the best plan is to leave the dug-down crabs where they are while the new tank is established. If these crabs are molting, digging them up could kill them. Once the dug-down crabs come up, wait a few days before transferring them to the new tank, as the other crabs may try to eat a freshly molted crab. If you want evidence of the crabs coming to the surface, smooth the substrate surface after you take out the crabs that are not underground. That way, you will be able to see crab tracks in the substrate even if you don't see a crab with your own eyes.
(Another tip: when you put new crabs into a tank with your existing crabs, take all of the crabs and give them a short soak in water treated with Stress Coat. It can help cut down on fighting between new and old tank mates, as it gives everyone a common smell.)

Hope this helps!

Thank you! I needed a bigger tank for all my hermits and need to transfer a lot of animals to different tanks since some keep bullying the other...(my turtles). So i figured i would transfer my two bigger baby turtles to my old hermit tank. I think the new hermit tank is 30 gallons...not so positive since it was at a flea market for only $10.00!! Can't wait to redecorate their new home(:
