Hot glue

Post by Krusty2015 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 10:16 am

Wondering if hot glue is safe? I am planning on building a little food dish with shells and cholla wood.

Yes it's safe, I use high temp hot glue because it sets really firm.

Its safe but the humidity deteriorates quickly...

I built this out of hot glue for my old tank and it fell apart! The hot glue and gun i used were construction grade and meant for wood and didn't last a week.
Stick with aquarium grade silicone! They sell it at home depot just wait for the stinky smell to go away!

Hot glue works well to assemble items (I use a hot glue gun to make popsicle stick toys for my mice) but, unfortunately, doesn't hold up well in humid crabitat conditions. The glue will deteriorate fairly quickly, causing your carefully crafted item to fall apart.

The better option is use aquarium silicon as it is meant to hold up in wet conditions. The only downside is that the item assembled using the silicon has to stay far away from the crabitat for a few days until the silicon cures and the chemical smell has dissipated. This is a good and inexpensive brand: http://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-2-8-oz-S ... /100128841
