Better option for saltwater!

Post by jillybeans » Thu Jul 21, 2016 2:52 pm

I figured I would share, because I hate mixing instant ocean water. Petco sells filtered pacific ocean water in a 5 gallon box. I'm not sure about petsmart. Here is the link so you know what you're looking for http://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore ... cean-water and I believe Dr. Foster's also sells a different version. It probably is more expensive than mixing your own, but I personally would rather spend a couple extra bucks and not mix it lol & the crabs also seem to like it better.

I don't know i spent not a lot of money on insant ocean from THP and one gallon has lastest me more than a week so far.
I wouldn't trust anything prepackaged but thats just me. It litterally takes me 2 minutes to mix a gallon jug. I just buy poland spring water
and put in the salt and done.

I agree with @isadorisacat. Filtered ocean water doesn't sound like a good thing -- needed minerals may be lost in the process. I just use empty plastic gallon Arrowhead water jugs, fill them with tap water, add the API dechlorinator, shake, then add a 1/2 cup of Instant Ocean, shake again and we're good to go for at least a week.

My line of thinking was that real ocean water would be better than synthetic, because its natural. I guess its like how some moms believe breast is best and others opt to mix formula for babies haha. At any rate, I've tried both and my mixed tank of hermies (mostly straws) have thrived the past three years on the filtered pacific ocean water. Very healthy, bright, and bold.

I don't see what could hurt.
Often all the dissolved minerals are small enough anyway, so they shouldn't be removed. At least, in large amounts. I personally think that the "filtration" process just involved removing of organic matter - like feces, "floaties" and mulm - and stuff like micro-organisms - which would die off anyway and maybe, algae... Maybe try and find what exactly they filter out, just in case - so you can substitute it into their diet. And also, how they filter it out - if its chemically treated, I would just mix my own batch.
